About this work

Eric Stefanski's "Be As Romantic As You Want" presents its titular phrase as both invitation and dare, rendered in the artist's characteristic hand-painted lettering against a field that holds the weight of emotional permission. The words stretch across the substantial 60 x 84 inch canvas, their scale transforming a whispered encouragement into a declaration that commands the room. Stefanski's brushwork carries the subtle imperfections of human touch—edges that soften, pigment that pools and thins—rejecting the cold precision of mechanical text in favor of something that breathes. The work operates in the territory Stefanski has made distinctly his own: language as image, statement as portrait. Here, the phrase functions as emotional residue, capturing a moment of vulnerability or perhaps the voice of someone granting freedom to another, or to themselves. There is tenderness in the command, a recognition that romance requires courage, that sincerity has become something we need permission to pursue. Within Stefanski's broader practice, the piece exemplifies his interest in words that carry psychological charge—phrases that seem extracted from conversations, therapy sessions, late-night confessions, or the internal monologue we rarely speak aloud. The oil medium lends warmth and depth, each letter becoming a gesture rather than mere typography. The generous scale ensures the message cannot be ignored or scrolled past; it demands presence and response. About Eric Stefanski

Eric Stefanski is a Chicago based artist known for large scale abstract paintings that incorporate bold, handwritten text. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2015.

Stefanski's work merges expressive mark making with direct, often humorous or self-deprecating phrases, using language as a way into larger themes around vulnerability, failure, and the pressures of maintaining a creative practice. His large-scale canvases favor vibrant color and bold lettering, with text functioning less as slogan and more as fragments of internal dialogue, blending humor with genuine emotional weight. Through this approach, Stefanski examines what it means to sustain a life as a working artist, treating uncertainty and contradiction as part of the process rather than something to resolve.

His work has been shown extensively in Chicago and Boston, along with solo exhibitions in cities including Tokyo and Madrid, and has continued to expand into galleries and institutions internationally.

He continues to live and work in Chicago.
