About this work

David Hockney's 20 Flowers series is an extension of the iPad paintings he created while quarantining at his studio and 17th-century house in Normandy during the pandemic. Inspired by his daily observations, Hockney immersed himself in the digital medium, which allowed him to be prolific in capturing his home, the changing seasons, and the surrounding countryside. The works in this series reveal Hockney’s meticulous technique for drafting larger-than-life compositions on the iPad, highlighting the presence of his hand despite the digital medium. His flowers capture the fleeting stillness of their subjects, while his immersive landscapes convey the vastness of his rural surroundings. Drawing from art historical influences such as the Bayeux Tapestry, seventeenth-century Chinese scrolls, and Henri Matisse's still lifes, Hockney’s pieces reflect his distinctive sense of time and space, whether bound to a single moment or created from multiple planes of vision. In each of his gridded picture planes, Hockney reimagines the Normandy countryside with bright colors, abstracted forms, and impossible angles, transforming traditional outdoor scenes. Themes of renewal and rebirth are prevalent, with the resulting body of work reflecting the pastoral nostalgia and beauty of the natural world.Consistent elements across the series, such as the species of flower, type of vase, and color of the tablecloth, showcase Hockney’s technique and dedication to his subject. Each piece displays a spectrum of floral compositions with contrasting tones and textures, balancing the central artistic elements of line, color, and perspective.

About the 20 Flowers Series

David Hockney 20 Flowers Prints For Sale

David Hockney's "20 Flowers" series represents a pivotal return to observational drawing by one of the world's most celebrated living artists. Created during the 2021 lockdown at his Normandy residence, this intimate body of work captures Hockney's undiminished vitality at 83 years old. Working primarily on iPad before translating select compositions into fine art prints, Hockney rendered these still life studies with the same innovative spirit that has defined his six-decade career. The series exemplifies his lifelong fascination with perception, color theory, and the challenge of representing three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface—themes that connect this work to his iconic California pool paintings and Yorkshire landscapes.

The technical execution of the "20 Flowers" series demonstrates Hockney's masterful command of both traditional and digital media. Each composition reveals his distinctive use of bold, saturated color and confident line work, whether rendered digitally or through lithography. Works like "A Closer Look at Some Tulips" and "Sunflower with Exotic Flower" showcase his ability to find monumentality in modest subjects, while pieces such as "Red, Yellow and Purple Flowers on a Blue Tablecloth" display his sophisticated understanding of chromatic harmony and spatial arrangement. The inclusion of earlier works like "Lithograph of Water Made Of Lines With Two Light Blue Washes" (1978-1980) provides important historical context, illustrating Hockney's decades-long exploration of mark-making and representation.

From a market perspective, Hockney's "20 Flowers" series occupies a significant position within the contemporary art landscape. As one of the highest-grossing living artists at auction, Hockney's works command serious collector attention, with his market consistently demonstrating strength across all media. The accessibility and intimacy of the flower studies make them particularly appealing to both established collectors and those seeking museum-quality works by a blue-chip artist. These pieces offer a rare opportunity to acquire recent work from an artist whose production has slowed with age, yet whose cultural relevance and market performance continue to appreciate.
