Tribute To Murakami, 2023
Watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press paper
8.5 x 8.5 in 21.6 x 21.6 cm
This vibrant watercolor presents Adam Lister's signature geometric interpretation of contemporary pop culture, paying homage to Takashi Murakami's iconic smiling flower motifs. Rendered in bold, saturated hues of pink, yellow, and blue, the composition features cheerful blooms arranged against a dynamic background. Lister's distinctive approach fragments the imagery into angular, faceted planes that recall both digital pixelation and stained glass, creating a playful dialogue between traditional watercolor techniques and contemporary visual language. The work is executed on professional-grade Arches cold press paper, allowing for rich color saturation and precise control. This piece represents a fascinating convergence of two influential contemporary artists, with Lister's minimalist aesthetic reinterpreting Murakami's celebrated superflat style. The intimate square format and modest scale make it an accessible entry point for collectors interested in Lister's work, while the cross-cultural artistic dialogue adds conceptual depth. The watercolor medium showcases the artist's technical versatility beyond his widely recognized digital aesthetic. Available for purchase — enquire for price and availability.

Adam Lister is an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor who studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, earning a BFA in painting in 2003. He worked as a decorative mosaic tile artist and later as an elementary school art teacher in Manhattan before establishing his career as a full time artist.
Lister works in watercolor, translating iconic images from classical art, film, and pop culture into a fragmented, geometric style. His compositions are built from simplified shapes and blocky forms, drawing on both Cubism and the pixelated look of early video game graphics. Subjects range from paintings by Da Vinci, Vermeer, and Hokusai to characters and scenes from comic books and animation. The contrast between the fluid, unpredictable nature of watercolor and the rigid, grid like structure of his compositions is central to his work, reflecting how images are remembered and reconstructed over time.
Lister has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including shows in California, Colorado, New York, Taiwan, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom. He has also collaborated with brands including BAPE and Medicom Toy, and expanded into NFTs in 2021.
