Sante D’Orazio’s photography, just like the subjects portrayed in it, mark the end of an era. It reflects the spreading out of American pop culture all over the world during the eighties and nineties.
A constant aspect in his work is the level of trust he has with his models, a situation reflected in the desire emanating from the images.Since the last two decades, his photographs portray the archetype of the Occidental aesthetic ideal: images of Penelope Cruz’s face, the naked torso of Axl Rose, the anonymous breasts of a model, images derived of an erotic thesis idealized through impeccable technique.
D’Orazio’s recent work breaks the traditional style that has marked his career since the eighties, when he sprung to fame as a fashion photographer. Publishing work in different magazines, such as Warhol’s Interview, Vogue and Vanity Fair, he became part of an exclusive circle of artists, actors and musicians creating iconographic images of American Pop Culture.
D’Orazio has exhibited in the Kunsthaus Munich, Kunsthauswien Vienna, the L.A. County Museum, Stellan Holm Gallery (New York), Cameraworks Gallery (Berlin) Hilario Galguera Gallery (Mexico City) and NRW Forum in Düsseldorf. His publications include: A Private View, Sante D’Orazio Photographs, Pam: American Icon, Katlick School, Gianni and Donatella and Barely Private.
