David Hockney's iPhone drawings are another of the artist's familiar diversions, following his brilliant experiments with faxes, photocopies, and Polaroids. These works stem from Hockney's restless need to find new ways of looking and drawing.

During the 2000s, Hockney began producing digital art on his iPhone and iPad, works that perfectly reflect his unstoppable imagination and drive to explore new image-making possibilities. Despite his age, Hockney meticulously depicts everyday objects, creating colorful, striking, and patterned images. These works reveal Hockney’s performative approach, capturing the everyday activity of self-observation and self-articulation in a gestural manner.

Since then, Hockney has produced hundreds of images on his iPhone. The advanced software aligns smoothly with his hand, allowing for sensitivity in painterly lines and colors. Hockney's skill is accentuated by the detailed and bright colors in his works. The selection of motifs—such as burning candles, a vase of flowers, or a phone charger—resembles pages from his diary, showcasing a new approach to intimacy and immediacy in his art.

Hockney uses an application called Brushes, often drawing with his thumb. Once he completes a drawing, he sends it to about 20 friends via email, immediately sharing his creations. This practice not only demonstrates his innovative use of technology but also emphasizes the personal and immediate nature of his digital artwork.
