Working primarily in cotton, he cuts, layers, and stitches imagery and words to create monumental banners and soft sculptural forms that wrestle with histories of the American South, the African diaspora, and the weight of inherited narratives.
Within his work, iconography drawn from traditional tattoo flash, nautical imagery, blues and hip‑hop lyrics, and deep Southern symbolism are re-contextualized: anchors, mermaids, script, skeletal forms - each re-inscribed with new meaning and urgency. In blending the delicate labor of sewing with the power of text and symbol, Martin’s pieces hold the tension between vulnerability and insistence - inviting the viewer to move closer, to read, to reckon.
His installations often fill entire rooms, banners hanging at different heights, soft sculptures drifting in space, creating a kind of slow choreography between viewer and cloth. Cotton becomes not just medium but message: a reclamation of the material thread of a past bound to forced labor, race, memory - each seam bearing both rupture and repair.
In Martin’s hands, fabric becomes radical presence: fragile, tactile, political, deeply poetic.
