Christian Hiadzi
122 x 91 cm
Christian Hiadzi's captivating figurative art delves into the emotional tension between realistic portraiture and the striking beauty of abstract figures, often set against the backdrop of the everyday. A self-taught artist of Ghanaian-British heritage, Christian was born in Ghana, where he spent his early years before relocating to London, England, where he now lives and works. Having made art since the age of 8, his background as a trained architect informs his creative approach, seeing a deep connection between art and architecture. To him, they represent the yin and yang that keep his life in balance.
At the heart of his artistic journey is a desire to create works that serve as a catalyst, challenging and expanding the viewer's imagination. He views himself as the messenger, a conduit through which the audience’s imagination is stirred beyond the surface. His emotions are intertwined with his art, and he believes each piece carries a part of him. He often asks, "What is a painting if it doesn't evoke emotion or provoke thought?"
Working primarily with acrylic, as well as oil and charcoal, Hiadzi’s pieces range from richly textured, vibrant figures to more recent explorations of dark-skinned subjects. He utilizes both brushes and palette knives in his evolving style, which reflects his personal growth. Artists like Francis Bacon and Kerry James Marshall serve as major influences, inspiring his quest to capture something deeper than what meets the eye. Hiadzi’s work is part of private collections across the globe.
