David Hockney’s latest body of work, “20 Flowers”expands on his iPad paintings created while quarantining at this studio in Normandy during the pandemic. Inspired by his daily observations, Hockney shares, “I started these Flowers in 2021, after finishing my scroll of a year in Normandy. I was just sitting at the table in our house and I caught sight of some flowers sitting in a vase. Being February, the sun was low casting a deep shadow on the table. Today there are many new printing mediums that have some qualities that seem to fit the iPad perfectly. Inkjet printing leaves some real pigment on the surface. Other printing cannot do this.”

Though attributes vary in each work, such as the species of flower, type of vase, and the color of the tablecloth, consistent elements across this series allow viewers to admire Hockney’s technique and dedication to his subject. Capturing a spectrum of floral compositions with contrasting tones and textures, Hockney displays his propensity for balancing the central artistic elements of line, color, and perspective.
