Details of Renaissance Paintings (Paolo Uccello, St. George and the Dragon, 1460), (FS II.326) is a screenprint from his Details of Renaissance Paintings series, specifically from the portfolio titled Details of Renaissance Paintings (Paolo Uccello, St. George and the Dragon, 1460).
This series features several reinterpretations of iconic Renaissance artworks, transformed through Warhol’s distinctive Pop Art style. Among them is Paolo Uccello’s St. George and the Dragon, originally painted in 1460. Warhol reimagined the painting as a series of four screenprints, each rendered in different color schemes to give each version a unique identity. In St. George and the Dragon FS. 326, he uses vibrant, saturated colors and overlays the entire image with a red-toned filter, lending the work a bold, contemporary feel. By focusing on the damsel’s upper body and a single wing of the dragon, Warhol isolates a specific fragment of the original composition, emphasizing visual detail and inviting new interpretations.
Warhol sought to reframe Renaissance paintings by infusing them with the bold colors and reproducible qualities of Pop Art. Through screenprinting, he was able to produce multiple versions of each image, each with its own palette, reflecting the mass production inherent in modern consumer culture. By cropping in on select portions of these celebrated works, Warhol stripped away their traditional religious or historical narratives and encouraged viewers to reconsider them through a modern lens. His focus on isolated imagery echoes his treatment of celebrities and commercial products—figures removed from context and turned into icons.
While Warhol aimed to distance his work from the original intent of the Renaissance masters, his approach also conveyed deep respect for their artistry. In St. George and the Dragon FS 326, as in the rest of the series, both honors and critiques the past—bridging centuries of visual culture and inviting a fresh dialogue between tradition and innovation.
