Paloma Picasso (FS. II 121) by Andy Warhol was published as part of the America’s Hommage à Picasso portfolio, a collection featuring works by 68 artists honoring Pablo Picasso. This piece is a unique acetate positive portraying Paloma Picasso, the daughter of Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot. Warhol juxtaposes vibrant blocks of orange, purple, and turquoise across Paloma’s right eye against the stark black-and-white shading of her face. This striking contrast naturally draws the viewer’s attention to her uncovered eye, inviting a deeper connection with the subject.

Paloma Picasso inherited her parents' creative spirit, becoming a celebrated fashion designer and businesswoman, with her jewelry featured prominently at Tiffany & Co. Today, two of her notable designs are housed in U.S. museums: her moonstone ring at The Field Museum of Natural History and her kunzite and pearl necklace at the National Museum of Natural History. Beyond her public persona, Paloma was also one of Warhol’s close friends and confidants, often sharing conversations about her jewelry and perfume ventures during their social outings. In Paloma Picasso (FS. II 121), Warhol’s mastery of the screenprinting process is on full display. He employed acetate positives—a fundamental element in his creative technique—to translate his photographs and drawings into vibrant, layered compositions. This work stands as a testament to Warhol’s innovation in screenprinting and his deep personal connections within the world of art and fashion.
