Andy Warhol’s Hans Christian Andersen FS. II 396 is a screenprint from Warhol’s 1987 Hans Christian Andersen I portfolio, inspired by both paper cut-outs of fairy tale characters and a photographic portrait of the legendary Danish author. In this composition, Warhol creates a striking Pop Art contrast with a vivid blue figure set against a layered background of black and soft pastel hues, exemplifying his signature use of bold color to elevate simple forms.

Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith in New York and published by Art Expo Danmark in Odense, Denmark, the portfolio was completed shortly before Warhol’s death in 1987. Each work, including Hans Christian Andersen FS. II 396, was posthumously stamped in black on the verso and is catalogued from FS II.394 to 401. The piece reflects Warhol’s fascination with visual storytelling and his ability to transform literary tradition into bold contemporary art.
