Andy Warhol
21.6 x 27.9 cm
In 1979, the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization commissioned Andy Warhol to create the screenprint U.N. Stamp F.S. II 185 as part of an artist initiative aimed at raising funds for UN projects. Warhol joined a distinguished group of contributors—including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and others—who were invited to produce artworks supporting the organization’s humanitarian efforts.
For his contribution, Warhol chose to reinterpret the modest UN postage stamp, a simple yet powerful global symbol of unity and cooperation. True to his signature approach, Warhol transformed this everyday object into a striking work of art, elevating the familiar and encouraging viewers to reconsider its significance. As with much of his broader oeuvre, UN Stamp demonstrates Warhol’s unique ability to isolate mundane symbols and imbue them with new meaning, inviting us to appreciate the overlooked beauty embedded in the everyday.
