Bomb Hugger also known as Bomb Love is a 2003 screen print by Banksy that explores the themes of war and peace.Bomb Hugger was released as a limited edition screenprint by publishers Pictures on Walls in 2004 as a signed edition of 150 and an unsigned edition of 600. Both in subject and timing, the work can be seen to heavily reference the 1964 Stanley Kubrick film “Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Love The Bomb”. Bomb Hugger highlights the typical Banksy contrast and juxtaposition of two seemingly opposed subjects – love and war and innocence and hate. The young girl representing innocence and purity, and the bomb symbolizes war, hatred and violence. The image's power lies in the discomfort it provokes in the viewer, depicting a child holding a deadly weapon, which might explode at any minute. The bubble-gum pink background and its contrast with the dark, heavy stencil stencil figure of the girl and the bomb further reinforce the dichotomy and juxtaposition of the images. Bomb Hugger contains classic Banksy motifs and themes that feature across his career, Banksy’s anti-war stance, his belief in peace and his questioning of how the media manipulate the masses into agreeing with war as a sort of false prophet and one that will ultimately bring about our destruction due to our manipulated love of war and how our modern society is desensitized to war.
