Jeff Koons’s celebrated collaboration with Louis Vuitton, unveiled in 2017 under the “Masters” collection, brings a bold Pop Art sensibility to classic fine art. Koons reimagined iconic paintings by the Old Masters—such as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Titian’s Mars, Venus and Cupid, Rubens’s The Tiger Hunt, Fragonard’s Young Girl with Dog, and Van Gogh’s Wheatfield with Cypresses—by transferring them onto Louis Vuitton’s signature handbags, backpacks, scarves, wallets, and accessories.
Each item in the collection features eye-catching design elements: the name of the original artist is printed in gleaming gold lettering across the front, while Koons’s signature inflatable bunny motif appears as a charm. The designs echo Koons’s Gazing Ball series, blending high art with consumer culture, and challenge distinctions between museum masterpieces and luxury fashion goods.
The collection debuted with a high-profile event near the Louvre and drew attention from major celebrities and collectors. With a limited production of around 50 pieces per painting, these items quickly became coveted. Prices ranged from $2,800 to $4,000, reflecting both the craftsmanship involved and the cultural significance of the collaboration. Koons and Louis Vuitton successfully merged two worlds—art history and contemporary fashion—creating a provocative collection that made fine art wearable.
