Jenny Holzer’s "Conclusion" (2016) is a poignant series of six prints that critically examines the United States' involvement in the "war on terror." This work references two redacted government documents that detail foreign and national terrorism threats, embedding the theme of censorship directly into the artwork. Holzer physically removed copper from the printing plates, a process that symbolizes the redaction and suppression of information. This meticulous technique ensures that the concept of censorship is not only visually present but also inherent in the very creation of each piece.

The prints in "Conclusion" evoke the aesthetics of Abstract Expressionism through bold, saturated rectangles in colors such as white, yellow, blue, orange, red, and green. These vibrant shapes hover over textured, painted backgrounds, creating a striking visual contrast. The use of these intense colors and abstract forms serves to draw attention to the underlying themes of the series, juxtaposing the beauty of the artwork with the grave subject matter it addresses. The mark-making in these works echoes the expressive and dynamic techniques characteristic of Abstract Expressionist artists, adding a layer of historical and artistic depth to the series.

Holzer’s "Conclusion" is a powerful commentary on the complexities and obscured truths of governmental actions in the context of terrorism. By incorporating elements of redaction and Abstract Expressionism, Holzer not only highlights issues of censorship and transparency but also invites viewers to reflect on the broader implications of these hidden narratives. The series stands as a testament to Holzer’s ability to merge aesthetic beauty with critical social commentary, continuing her legacy of challenging viewers to engage with and question the world around them.
