In the summer of 1985, Keith Haring traveled to Copenhagen to contribute a mural to the *Homo Decorens* exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. During this visit, he met Danish master printer Niels Borch Jensen. Their encounter led to one of Haring’s most significant works on paper.

“I had installed my first large press earlier that day, and we decided to meet in my studio the next day and make the biggest print we could. I prepared the plates, and when he arrived, he immediately started working, sitting on the floor, without any preliminary sketches or tracings. He started with the figure’s shoulders and built the motive from there. It only took him a few hours to finish all three plates.”

The resulting artwork, *Medusa Head*, became not only the largest print Keith Haring ever produced, but also the first large-scale print created by Niels Borch Jensen. Rendered in aquatint on Hahnemühle paper, the piece spans more than one meter in height and nearly 2.5 meters in width, making it a monumental achievement in both artists' careers.

Haring’s influence on contemporary art is vast. As a pivotal figure in New York’s 1980s avant-garde scene, he was known for his energetic lines, vivid color palette, and art that delivered powerful social messages. Created in 1986, Untitled (Medusa) reflects these hallmarks, depicting a Hydra-like form composed of multiple bodies emerging from a central figure. The story behind its creation, rooted in Copenhagen, adds a unique chapter to Haring’s international legacy.

Haring was more than an artist—he was an activist whose work addressed issues like sexuality, religion, politics, and public health. He used his platform to champion HIV/AIDS awareness, nuclear disarmament, and racial justice, often creating art that was accessible to the public through murals and subway drawings.

This collaboration with BORCH Editions remains a milestone in Haring’s oeuvre. As Niels Boe-Hauggaard, Head of Modern Art at Bruun Rasmussen, reflects: “Keith Haring’s works are the epitome of New York’s art scene in the 1980s, but this work was created by the artist in Copenhagen and is therefore – unbeknown to many – a Danish slice of the legendary artist’s life and work.”
