Overview
“My first art show was in a pizza place in Provincetown that I didn’t expect much from, but [it] ended up being a sold‑out show. When I was first starting out there were so many supportive people in the community that believed in me and I owe [them] a lot of my success today because I’m lucky enough to live here.”
Derek Macara is an American artist born in 1987. Macara's artwork can be found around the world. He is popularly known for his paintings depicting rural New England scenery, particularly for his depictions of his native Cape Cod. Raised in the art colony of Provincetown, his upbringing exposed him to many well-known and prolific artists. As a child, he spent several years studying at the Hawthorne School of Art. Recently, Macara's work has been gaining notoriety amongst art collectors and museums. He currently lives and works in his hometown of Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Further fueled by his creative energy, Macara has also leveraged social media - particularly TikTok and Instagram - to share his painting process with a broad audience. Derek Macara’s paintings immerse us in the quiet, expansive beauty of the North East American coastline—where open water, shifting light, and vast skies become spaces for reflection rather than spectacle. His work is less about narrative and more about atmosphere, capturing fleeting moments that feel both deeply personal and universally familiar.
Throughout the paintings, the ocean dominates. It stretches endlessly, often uninterrupted, acting as both subject and setting. Boats appear, sometimes occupied, sometimes empty—small, human traces within an overwhelming natural expanse. These vessels are not the focus, but rather points of entry, guiding the viewer into the composition and anchoring an otherwise boundless space.
Figures, when present, are intentionally anonymous—turned away, obscured by shadow, or reduced to silhouette. This removes any sense of fixed identity and instead invites projection. The viewer is not observing the scene—they are placed within it.
Macara’s command of light is central to the work. Whether it’s the soft diffusion of early morning, the sharp reflection of a setting sun, or the cool glow of moonlight stretching across water, each painting is structured around how light interacts with surface. The ocean becomes a mirror, a rhythm, a quiet force that carries the emotional weight of the scene.
There is also a distinct cinematic quality to these compositions. The cropping, the horizon line, the scale of the clouds—each element feels deliberate, as though we are witnessing a single frame from a much larger story. And yet, nothing is resolved. The tension lies in what is left unsaid.
For collectors, Macara’s work sits at a compelling intersection. Visually, it is immediate—clean, atmospheric, and highly legible, translating seamlessly across digital platforms with strong viral potential. But materially, the work holds depth: subtle brushwork, controlled gradients, and a refined understanding of composition that rewards in-person viewing.
As his practice evolves, this balance between clarity and complexity positions Derek Macara as an artist to watch—one whose work captures attention instantly, but continues to resonate long after the first glance.
