    Jason Hackenwerth
I see my function as similar to a hiker on a remote trail who piles stones along the way to help others remain on the path.

Jason Hackenwerth is a multidisciplinary artist working in the fields of painting, sculpture, and installation. His work has been exhibited in galleries, and museums around the world including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the National Museums Scotland. Jason received his MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010 and Bachelor of Fine Art in printmaking from Webster University, 1997. Press includes, The New York Times, Art In America, Surface Magazine, American Craft, Design Journal, Sculpture Magazine, Metal Magazine, Art Desk, Creative Review UK, Creative Review. Jason is a 2011 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Inc. grant recipient, and a 2018 and 2022 recipient of the Creative Pinellas Professional Artist Grant.

"I see my function as similar to a hiker on a remote trail who piles stones along the way to help others remain on the path. As such, when I encounter dazzling works by other artists I feel a connectedness to the experience. A feeling of affirmation that others have taken this path and that it is a worth-while endeavor. When the rocks are piled so carefully and so skillfully that they seem to defy gravity, it is a reminder to let go of the need to reach the destination and recognize that what is most sacred are the examples we leave for others along the journey.

My work is a continual practice of arranging the stones so surprisingly that they become arresting beacons of assurance that we are not lost, we are not alone. We are."

Jason Hackenwerth’s paintings pulse with a visceral emotional charge, each canvas a raw extension of the artist’s internal landscape. His gestural mark-making—sweeps, drags, smears, and sudden bursts—captures not just motion, but sensation. The works feel less like images and more like encounters: with memory, with conflict, with transformation. There’s a vulnerability to them, an openness that suggests the act of painting is not only expressive, but necessary—a way to process the unseen forces shaping our inner lives. The physicality of Hackenwerth’s work is unmistakable. You can feel the movement of the body in every brushstroke, as if the surface is a site of struggle or release. Thick layers build and dissolve, and fragments of text emerge only to be buried again, echoing the way emotion rises and recedes. Even in his more muted palettes, the tension between control and surrender remains electric. These are not polished or cerebral paintings—they are alive, immediate, and deeply human.

Little Genocide by Jason Hackenwerth is a hauntingly emotive work, where beauty and brutality collide on the canvas. The painting carries immense psychological weight, with tangled, organic forms rendered in muted blues, nudes, and black. The gestural brushwork feels raw and urgent, evoking a sense of quiet violence or lingering trauma. Little Genocide is a powerful meditation on vulnerability, memory, and the quieter, often unseen ruptures that leave lasting marks.

  • An Interview With Jason Hackenwerth

Jason Hackenwerth is a multidisciplinary artist known for his large-scale, ephemeral balloon sculptures and vibrant paintings. His installation art often involves organic forms that resemble creatures from a fantastical realm, crafted meticulously from hundreds of latex balloons. These installations are celebrated for their bold colors and dynamic movement, captivating viewers with their temporary yet impactful presence. Hackenwerth’s work extends to painting, where he explores similar themes of transformation and organic growth. His paintings are characterized by vivid colors and abstract forms that echo the fluidity and energy of his installations. Both mediums reflect his fascination with the intersection of art and nature, emphasizing the beauty and impermanence of life. Hackenwerth’s innovative approach and diverse artistic practice have made him a prominent figure in contemporary art.
