Known for his ability to merge humor, satire, and social commentary, Perry here turns to ceramics—a medium deeply rooted in British craft traditions—to celebrate figures who are often overlooked despite their indispensable contributions.
The four hand-painted figures are clothed in striped tops, patterned jackets, and brightly colored trousers, evoking both individuality and collectivity. Two hold trays with meals, while others carry loaves of bread and essential goods, transforming them into symbols of service and sustenance. Their slightly naïve, folk-art aesthetic recalls Staffordshire figurines, a nod to English domestic traditions, but Perry reconfigures that lineage by focusing on the working-class heroes of the pandemic rather than aristocrats, monarchs, or religious icons.
The work is not only a gesture of gratitude but also a sharp piece of social observation. By elevating everyday workers into art objects, Perry draws attention to class hierarchies and questions why those who provide the most essential services—nurses, carers, delivery drivers, and supermarket staff—are often undervalued in times of normalcy. The figures, with their simple, almost childlike charm, become embodiments of resilience, community, and humanity at a time of global crisis.
Ceramics, with their fragility and permanence, serve as an apt metaphor: like clay, society is malleable, but without care it can fracture. Perry’s decision to memorialize Key Workers in ceramic form ensures that their role during a transformative historical moment will not be forgotten. At once humble and monumental, the set underscores Perry’s ongoing commitment to exploring social narratives through traditional craft, while infusing them with a contemporary urgency and wit.

Whether across prints, ceramics, tapestries of originals Grayon Perry’s ability to weave rich narratives and stories knows no bounds. Raised in a working-class household, Perry's early life experiences greatly influenced his artistic perspective and has seen Perry receive widespread acclaim for his thought-provoking and provocative exploration of themes such as identity, gender, class, and cultural stereotypes.
Perry's work often incorporate bright colors and intricate designs, and have become emblematic of his folkloric artistic style. He gained particular attention for his series of vases, which subvert traditional notions of masculinity and femininity by combining images of motorcycles, cartoons, and sexual imagery. These pieces, along with his other extensive body of tapestries, lithographs and prints, challenge viewers to reconsider their preconceptions about gender and societal norms.
The 2003 Turner Prize winner artist is equally as well known for his thoughtful and insightful contributions as a broadcaster where his wit, charm and intelligence are as evident as they are in his art. Perry’s skill as an artist lies in his ability to distill complex issues into a series of vignettes which combine playful elements with daily life and subversive motifs which pke fun at and critique.
No talk of Perry is complete without a nod to his cross-dressing alter ego, Claire, who appears in public appearances, performances and in his often autobiographical art. Through Claire, Perry further explores themes of identity and self-expression, challenging conventional ideas of masculinity and femininity.
Throughout his career, Perry has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to contemporary art, including the Turner Prize in 2003, making him the first ceramic artist to win the prestigious award. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2013 for his services to contemporary art.
