Created in the 1980s and continuing into the present, these works are defined by their uniform arrangements of brightly colored circles, evenly spaced against a pristine white background.
In Cefoxitin, Hirst arranges twelve perfectly round dots in a grid-like structure, each rendered in a different hue ranging from bold primaries—reds, blues, greens—to softer pastels and deep neutrals. The meticulous placement and flat, unmodulated application of color lend the work a sense of mechanical precision, while the chromatic variety creates vibrancy and rhythm across the surface. No two dots are the same color, and their spacing leaves the surrounding white space as important as the circles themselves, allowing the painting to breathe and heightening the optical balance.
Hirst has stated that the Spot Paintings were conceived as a way to produce pure color—isolated, unblended, and stripped of gesture or personal expression. By removing the artist’s hand, the paintings suggest a clinical, pharmaceutical quality, mirroring the naming convention of the works. Each title, including Cefoxitin, is borrowed from a chemical compound, specifically pharmaceutical drugs. Cefoxitin is an antibiotic, and its reference here underscores Hirst’s ongoing preoccupation with medicine, mortality, and systems of order.
The cool detachment of the Spot Paintings contrasts with the chaos of human experience, offering what Hirst once described as a “scientific approach to painting.” At the same time, the colors elicit emotional and sensory responses that resist total rationalization, reflecting the tension between order and feeling.
Cefoxitin embodies the paradox at the heart of the Spot Paintings: though seemingly endless in repetition, each work is unique, distinguished by its particular arrangement, size, and palette. This balance between sameness and individuality has made the series a cornerstone of Hirst’s practice and a critical reference point in late-20th- and early-21st-century art. The series has been exhibited globally, collected by major institutions, and remains highly sought-after in the art market.
In Cefoxitin, Hirst captures the essence of the series: a clinical yet playful exploration of color, science, and abstraction, where rigorous systems meet the joyful unpredictability of hue.

Whether enticed by his spins, seduced by his spots or inspired by his butterflies - Damien Hirst's prints and paintings are treasured by collectors across the world for the variety of subject matter and styles. Damien Hirst is the enfant terrible of the British artworld and its most successful living artist. His bold, brash and provocative prints, paintings and sculptures are coated in a type of warm sensitivity as he almost scientifically explores themes including life, death and rebirth.
Bursting onto the British art scene in the 1990s as part of the YBAs (young British Artists) with other notable artists including Tracey Emin and Mark Quinn, Hirst quickly gained critical and commercial acclaim. Shocking the artworld and the wider public with his animals suspended in formaldehyde solution and his infamous diamond-encrusted human skull, Hirst gained a reputation for his provocative works which brought taboo subjects firmly into the consciousness of the wider world. Throughout his career, Damien Hirst has been a master of invention and reinvention with his spin paintings, spots, skull and butterflies becoming some of his most popular and well known imagery
Damien Hirst prints and original art are full of a brave sense of contemplation as the artist blends the conceptual pursuit of understanding and meaning through visceral and impactful works. Known for his masterful use of colour and composition, Damien Hirst’s art is instinctual on both an intellectual and visual level.
Straddling both controversy and accessibility, Damien Hirst’s print output has seen the artist collaborate with publisher HENI through limited editions, NFTs and timed artwork drops. His older prints, notably the 12 Woodcut spot series, Memento butterflies and The Souls on Jacob’s Ladder continue to attract attention from collectors across the globe. Damien Hirst’s original paintings continue to command the attention of both public institutions and private collectors with his landmark spin series further cementing his legacy.
Damien Hirst’s prints are an exploration into the world around us and encompasses vast themes including life, death, religion and rebirth. At Guy Hepner, we have assisted collectors across the globe to buy Damien Hirst prints and enter into this unique perspective of our world.
