Before Hockney's cutting edge iPad Drawings, Hockney's passion for innovation and experimentation began with a photo copy machine at a friend's house. He shared, "Anyone who likes drawing or mark-making would like to explore new media. I'm not a mad technical person, but anything visual appeals to me. Anybody who draws will enjoy that sort of variety of graphic medium: because it requires inventiveness." For Hockney, the process has become just as important as the subject itself, setting himself apart from many of his contemporaries who seldom follow the traditional print making methods. With the Home Made Print series, Hockney was allotted a level of spontaneity and flexibility do to the immediacy of it. He shared, "With these copying machines, I can work by myself - indeed you virtually have to work by yourself; there's nothing for anyone else to do - and I can work at great speed and responsiveness. In fact this is the closest I've ever come in printing to what it's like to paintL I can put something down, evaluate it, alter it, revise it, all in a matter of seconds." In many ways, this earlier series set the stage to Hockney's innovations in years to come.
