“Every women I know wants one of these trunks, and so today we are going to set it on fire.”
“It turns out that Louis Vuitton trunks are fairly difficult to find, and its even harder in fact when you find one and if you tell someone you are doing to set it on fire, then they really don’t want you to have it.”
This is not the first time Shields has destroyed luxury items for the sake of art. In recent years we have seen the LA based artist chainsaw a Hermes Birkin, torch a pair of Christian Louboutins and destroy a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.
“This is a shot that I have been wanting to do for a long time. When we set the Birkin on fire and when we did indulgent series… this was always something that I wanted to have in that series. The truth is that it has taken me this long to actually be able to find the right trunk.”
Taking into consideration the rarity of the trunk, Shields did not want to destroy it before a few final shots. “I ultimately knew that I wanted to set it on fire, but I was like if I am going to have this trunk, you know I want to at least try and get one more or two more uses out of it.”
