Guy Hepner Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to present Russell James’ limited edition collection of five prints in honor of the release of his book “Backstage Secrets.” Armed with an all-access pass, a camera, and his uniquely personalized approach, Russell James captures never before seen moments of the world renowned Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. James’ photographs capture the candid moments, contagious excitement, and driving passion behind this global cultural phenomenon.
He reflects on his last 15 years photographing the show, sharing , “I have often likened my extraordinary backstage access to this wondrous show to being the janitor in the closet at the White House—I have been constantly present through an extraordinary evolution. However, the real story is one of relationships, mentorship, and trust that has taken many years to develop, and that I cherish. While I don’t have the words to describe what I have witnessed, I hope that these images will give you a sense of the amazing people and family-like relationships that are at the heart of this astonishing show. Never for one second do I take for granted the great privilege and trust that has been shown to me.”
James’ photographs have become synonymous with provocative and unique perspectives of some of the most prominent people of our time. He has worked with models Behati Prinsloo, Lily Aldridge, Adriana Lima, and Alessandra Ambrosio to name a few. His works have also appeared in Vogue, W, Marie Claire, GQ, Sports Illustrated, and multiple other international magazines and books. His distinctive style of blending fashion with extreme location derives from his roots of Western Australia, combined with his years spent traveling through the world’s biggest cities. James’ cutting edge photoshoots range from the shores of Caribbean beaches to studios in Milan, Paris, and Tokyo. Regardless of location, James’ ability to capture effortless moments in the fashion world is what marks his signature style. He shares, “If it looks effortless – if it looks like I’m not doing much, then I feel like I’m really doing my job.”
