Abstract Transfer Protocol by Manuel Fernandez

Guy Hepner and the TAX Collection are pleased to present Manuel Fernandez’s solo show: Abstract Transfer Protocol. In the same way that abstract expressionism used error and seemingly random inspiration as a starting point toward new meanings and the aesthetic of the unknown, BG Paintings emulates the glitch process – a visual error that is caused by the corruption of a digital file. The final images of the presented series are painted virtually, editing presets available in image software and combining that with organic manipulation of the digital material.

The core point of the BG Paintings series is: “These images are in a state of transit, are captured in an intermediate process between decomposition to be transmitted over the network and its recomposition in the destination point”.

The project begins at the intersection of art, pop culture and the Internet. The palette is inspired by the spectrum of color available on digital devices, the composition is achieved midway between the glitch process and abstraction.  The works are created by digital printing with UV Archival ink on traditional canvas – linking the works with the classic support that is  the canvas. Essentially the BG works blur the boundaries between computer graphics and painting, finding their niche between the virtual and the real.

Fernandez further explains his oeuvre by saying “I’m interested in how we perceive the reality framed by a device screen and the way that an artwork is distributed and received by an audience that views most of the exhibitions on smartphone and tablet screen. I am also interested in blurring the boundaries between digital and reality because we live in a time when both are the same reality.”
